LG to unveil world’s largest Organic LED display

Organic LED displays (OLED) have yet to make much of an impact on the mainstream market because only very small screens could reasonably be produced at a price that most could afford.

However, it seems that South Korean electronics firm, LG, has overcome the previous prohibitive factors and is gearing up to launch a range of OLED displays ranging up to 55 inches in size across the diagonal.

LED displays of this type are significantly more advanced than the current crop of LCD panels which feature in living rooms across the globe. This is because they are thinner, lighter, more energy efficient and also offer better contrast ratios and colour pallets.

Smartphone owners may be familiar with OLED displays because some high end handsets feature them, but nothing approaching 55 inches in size has ever been brought to market for consumers to consider, until now.

LG is rumoured to be unveiling the new 55 inch OLED screen at the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 in Las Vegas early next year, so eager fans of advanced display technology will not have long to wait to see it in action and get an idea of how much it might actually cost to use.

Of course while the LED display will almost certainly be at the higher end of the price scale, it does mean that people may be able to experience it as used by businesses and other organisations for signage, because here price will be less of a concern.

Another aspect about the screen which remains a mystery is its native resolution. Most modern displays feature full HD 1080p as their maximum pixel count, but LG has hinted at the OLED display supporting an Ultra Definition resolution. The future of LED displays is approaching with haste.
