LED displays top off New York taxis

The yellow taxi cab is as significant an icon of New York City as the black Hackney Carriage is in London. Advertisements have been perched on the roof of cabs in the Big Apple for many years, but now LED displays are going to start appearing in their place.

Billboard Taxi Media has recently announced its plans to bring LED displays to taxis across the US in order to create an engaging new space for businesses to run advertising campaigns.

LED displays measuring around 1.3 metres in length with full weather proofing to protect from the elements will be available for the various organisations which operate taxis, to make some extra revenue and involve passengers and passersby in new ways ,with full colour, full motion content.

The LED displays intended to be mounted on the roof of taxis are fully magnetised on the bottom so that they can be installed almost immediately.

One of the best features of the LED displays is the fact that they can be controlled remotely via a system which lets you refresh the content which they display regularly, so that only relevant campaigns are being shown.

Standard ads printed onto taxi cab tops or pasted onto doors can linger long after the product or service they are promoting has expired and so the flexibility and immediacy of LED displays and digital signage networks will come into play to enliven this industry.

Whether similar technology will eventually be seen on cabs in the UK remains to be seen. While it is unlikely that the classic black cab will end up adorned with an LED display in the short term, there is no telling what could happen in the future and in-cab advertising is already a growing phenomenon in the UK.
