What Is LED Module Protection?

LED module protection helps protect the visible surface of an LED display.

The front of an LED screen contains small light-emitting components that can be vulnerable to knocks, touch, dust, light moisture and handling damage. This is especially important on fine pixel pitch screens, where the LEDs are smaller and often viewed at close range.

Protective coatings create a more durable surface while still allowing the image to remain clear and bright.

Why LED Module Protection Matters

The smaller the pixel pitch, the more delicate the display surface can be.

In close-viewing applications, LED displays are often installed where people can stand near, walk past or touch the screen. This includes retail stores, schools, meeting rooms, control rooms, museums and public buildings.

What Is AOB?

AOB stands for Adhesive On Board.

It is another form of LED module surface protection. Like GOB, it is designed to improve durability by protecting the LEDs and module face from everyday contact, dust and damage.

The finish and protection method can vary depending on the manufacturer and screen type, but the purpose is similar: to make the LED module surface more resilient.

AOB vs GOB

AOB and GOB are both used to improve LED module protection, but the method, finish and level of protection may differ between products.

Both protect the LED module surface, not the full cabinet or enclosure. This distinction matters because surface protection is not the same as a screen’s IP rating.

Where LED Module Protection Is Useful

“GOB makes an LED screen waterproof”

Not necessarily. GOB protects the module surface, but waterproofing depends on the wider screen design and IP protection rating.

“AOB and GOB are the same as an IP rating”

No. AOB and GOB relate to surface-level module protection. IP ratings describe protection against dust and water entering the enclosure.

“Only outdoor LED screens need protection”

Indoor screens can also benefit from module protection, especially when installed in public-facing or close-contact environments.
