LED modules, sometimes referred to as LED boards, are the individual display units that make up the visible surface of an LED screen. Each module contains a grid of LEDs arranged in a precise pattern, along with the electronics required to control them.
By combining many modules together, manufacturers create larger LED displays of almost any size or shape. This modular approach is one of the defining characteristics of LED screen technology.
What Is an LED Module?
An LED module is a self-contained panel of LEDs mounted on a circuit board, designed to display a portion of the overall image on an LED screen.
Each module typically contains:
- Red, green and blue LEDs (RGB)
- A printed circuit board (PCB)
- Driver circuitry for controlling the LEDs
- Connectors for power and data signals
- A protective surface layer
Multiple modules are installed into a larger frame or LED cabinet, which then connects with other cabinets to form the full display.
Why LED Modules Matter
LED modules are fundamental to how LED screens function. They determine:
- The pixel pitch of the display
- The resolution of each cabinet
- The uniformity of brightness and colour
- The ease of maintenance and replacement
Because LED screens are modular, individual modules can be replaced if faults occur, rather than replacing the entire screen.
How LED Modules Work
Each module contains a grid of RGB LED packages, with each group forming a pixel.
The screen’s control system sends image data to the modules via receiver cards and driver chips. These components regulate the brightness of each red, green and blue LED to create the colours and images seen on the screen.
When thousands of these pixels work together across many modules, they form full-motion video and graphics.
Module Size and Layout
LED modules are manufactured in standard sizes, which vary depending on the screen type and pixel pitch.
Common module dimensions include:
- 320 mm × 160 mm
- 250 mm × 250 mm
- 192 mm × 192 mm
The number of pixels on each module depends on the pixel pitch and the module’s physical dimensions.
Smaller pixel pitches contain more LEDs per module, resulting in higher resolution and finer image detail.
LED Modules and Pixel Pitch
The design of an LED module is closely tied to the screen’s pixel pitch.
For example:
- A P1.5 module contains tightly packed LEDs for high-resolution displays
- A P4 or P6 module has wider spacing between pixels, suited to longer viewing distances
The pixel pitch selected for a screen determines how many LEDs are installed on each module and ultimately how detailed the image can appear.
Front-Serviceable vs Rear-Serviceable Modules
LED modules can be designed for different maintenance approaches.
Front-serviceable modules
- Removed from the front of the screen
- Often attached using magnets
- Ideal for wall-mounted installations
Rear-serviceable modules
- Accessed from behind the display
- Common in large outdoor LED screens
- Typically used where maintenance space is available
The servicing method affects how quickly modules can be replaced and how the display is installed.
Environmental Protection
Outdoor LED modules are designed to withstand environmental conditions and typically include:
- Weatherproof coatings
- Protective sealing against moisture and dust
- UV-resistant materials
These features allow outdoor LED screens to operate reliably in rain, wind and direct sunlight.
Indoor modules, by contrast, are usually designed with lighter construction and finer pixel pitches to prioritise image detail.
Maintenance and Replacement
One of the key advantages of LED module design is easy maintenance.
If a module develops a fault, technicians can:
- Remove the affected module
- Replace it with a new unit
- Reconnect power and data cables
This modular system allows repairs to be completed quickly and without dismantling the entire screen.
